Muay Thai Training in a Nut Shell
Learning Muay Thai is like learning to dance….it’s an expression of yourself.
There are three areas of the body trained to develop skill in Muay Thai
- The Eyes – Training the eyes to see your opponents intentions and respond
- The Brain – Developing mental reflexes and emotional strength
- The Body – Honing Your Techniques
Muay Thai happens in the moment…
…Your opponent throws a vicious punch toward your head and you – without thinking – …see the strike coming…the body reacts spontaneously…without thought…evades the punch and then slips in a strike of your own.
There’s so much going on in a single instant….but I’ll break it down for you
#1 – The Eyes
…How long you have to get out of the way of the punch… where the opponent is vulnerable…how far you stand from your opponent….etc.
#2 – The Brain
The brain decides in a split second the appropriate response….
..Do I step away? …Do I have enough time to block or can I counter?…is the punch being thrown too hard to block effectively?….etc.
#3 – The Body
In stance, your body is ready to respond….loose…and ready. Your feet move to evade the strike…but not just away…but to a position that’s away from the punch and sets you up to deliver your own strike to the opponent.
The Power of Your Subconscious Mind
Training the Eyes and Brain
There’s something in your brain, called the Reticular Activating System….or RAS for short.
It’s the part of your brain that unconsciously tells your conscious brain what’s valuable information and what to focus on.
Think of a time when you or someone in your family bought a new car…and magically you started seeing that car everywhere. There weren’t magically more of those cars on the road…your brain started picking up on it.
In the same way, as you continue to train your brain to see these stimulus, your brain will start to pick up on it magically, without you having to think about it.
Training the Techniques Into Your Body
Think of each technique as a set of ‘habit’s….bringing the hands back to protect the head….turning the hips into each strike…etc..
Only successfully performing the ‘habit’ sets you up to do again the successfully again in the future. On the other hand, doing it incorrectly without the feedback that it’s incorrect…sets you up to do it again incorrectly.
Successful execution of habit makes it easier to do the next time…and even easier the next.
And since we’re only really good at doing one new thing successfully at a time…we’re going to build you up this way, habit by habit…starting from the stance.
The Beginning of Training Muay Thai Begins in the STANCE
We start out by focusing on the stance…
Why?…because all Muay Thai techniques…like in any legitimate martial arts system…..were designed to be delivered from the martial art system’s particular stance.
After learning the stance, you’ll learn to throw the basic Muay Thai techniques, focusing on BALANCE first…Not Power….out of all of the attributes…balance…speed…accuracy…power…power is LEAST important.
Learn Mastery over Self…Before Mastery over Another
The first phase of your training will be learning to master yourself..your body…your mind…and delivering energy through your body. Only after this mastery becomes second nature…do we shift the focus on mastery over another..
Why? Because a fight happens in the moment..and there’s no time to think about whether your hands are protecting your face…they have to just go there everytime.
First Learn Technique…Master it…So You Can Forget About Technique
There’s such a dichotomy here….in the beginning we are all about thinking…all about conscious thought…and through conscious thought….just like developing the habit of eating less…
…We have to focus on it for long periods using our will…our conscious thought…less our most unconscious urges take over and we act out what we set out NOT to do which is eat everything is sight!
Through time and focus…the habits transform you and become who you are.
So there’s both a holding onto form and technique…focusing on it until it each habit is ingrained…until it becomes who we are…and then learning to let go…dropping the thinking behind technique…as it becomes a fluid…like a surfer riding a wave…in the moment.
So a lot of this beginning process is about physical transformation…getting your body to move in ways that generate power while staying balanced….learning to master your movement.
After Self-Mastery…is learning to Control of Another Person
However..it’s a journey to get there….and if you stay with me….and direct your focus piece by piece to self mastery, you can take this as far as you want to go.
How far you want to go…is ultimately your decision….maybe at first…you wanted to learn just the techniques as a way to stay in shape.…..maybe you have more ambitious goals to learn to truly master Muay Thai for self-defense.
Whatever your goal is…decide on it…and set that as the standard for yourself to reach.
What You May Discover Along the Way on This Journey
However it’s my belief that all things need to continue to grow in order to be happy.
When I first started Muay Thai…it started as a different way to work out…after 10 years of heavy lifting and getting buffed up..I felt like I had accomplished everything I wanted in that realm and needed something to keep me motivated.
Never in my mind, on the first day of training, did I have intentions of getting into the ring with another trained combatant.
However through the training….I transformed….my goals transformed…what was once difficult became easy and the process of growth that made me happy. Not just reaching my initial goal….but knowing each and every training session I liked who I was becoming more and more.
So I invite you on this journey with me into the unknown…into the depths of your body and mind….to become and grow into something you never imagined.
